HONOR Robot Phone launches Β· A camera that leaves the body

Highlights: what's actually new

A phone with a moving part, on purpose
Every flagship this year has argued about sensor size and zoom multipliers. HONOR turned up on 12 August with something nobody else is selling: a camera on a robotic arm.
The Robot Phone's main camera does not sit in the back panel. It sits in a motorised head that rises out of the top edge and then pans, tilts and rolls under its own power while you film. Point the phone roughly at a scene and the camera keeps the subject framed by physically turning, not by cropping into the sensor.
That is a genuinely new category of phone, and it comes with genuinely new trade-offs β a 248 g body, 9.59 mm of thickness and an IP54 rating, where an ordinary flagship this expensive would be sealed to IP68. HONOR built a mechanism instead of a spec-sheet win, and the compromises are exactly the ones a mechanism forces.
It is also the rare case where the company's own conventional flagship makes the clearest comparison. The Magic8 Pro runs the same Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and a similar 200 MP periscope, weighs 219 g, is 8.32 mm thick and carries IP68 plus IP69. The Robot Phone spends 29 g, 1.27 mm and most of its water resistance to buy a gimbal.
Design and build: a titanium mechanism in a metal unibody
The body is a metal unibody with R3 curved edges, 151.43 Γ 72.86 Γ 9.59 mm and roughly 248 g with the battery. That is heavy β about 30 g more than most 6.3-inch flagships β and you feel where the mass went the moment the head lifts.
The gimbal itself is the engineering story. HONOR uses an aerospace-grade titanium alloy architecture machined to 0.005 mm, with a rotation gap of just 0.4 mm. Against the motor from HONOR's dexterous robotic hand, the gimbal motor is 34% smaller by volume with 44% more torque density; the press material puts the motor at 2.6 g and quotes a torque density of 120 NΒ·m/L. The flip motor that raises the head is built from HONOR's own 2100 MPa shield steel and stacks 43 components into half a cubic centimetre.
On the back, the camera island is a single block that spans the full width of the top, so the phone lies flat on a desk rather than rocking when you tap a corner β a small mercy on a phone this heavy. The screen is covered by HONOR NanoCrystal Shield. Two colourways launch: Silver and Grey.
The rating to note is IP54. That is splash and dust resistance, not immersion β the direct cost of putting a moving, sealed-as-far-as-possible mechanism through the chassis. Treat this as a phone you keep out of the rain.

Displays: a 6.31-inch LTPO panel that goes very bright
The panel is a 6.31-inch OLED at 2640 Γ 1216, which works out to a dense, sharp FHD+ rather than a marketing-driven QHD. It runs 1β120 Hz adaptive LTPO, so it can drop to 1 Hz for a static screen and climb for scrolling.
Brightness is the headline: 6800 nits HDR peak, 2000 nits global peak, and 5500 nits across 20% of the panel. In practice the global figure is the one that governs outdoor readability, and 2000 nits is at the top of what phones do today.
For eye comfort HONOR quotes 4320 Hz high-frequency PWM dimming and circular-polarised light, alongside its AI display modes. The panel covers DCI-P3 with 1.07 billion colours, supports wet-touch input and takes up to 10 simultaneous touch points.
Performance: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, and a lot of memory
Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 runs the phone: a 3 nm part with two prime cores at 4.6 GHz, six performance cores at 3.62 GHz and the Adreno 840 GPU. HONOR cites a 32% CPU gain and a 37% NPU gain from Qualcomm's lab figures β the NPU number is the relevant one here, because the tracking, framing and subject-recognition work all run on-device while the gimbal moves.
Two configurations launch: 12 GB + 512 GB and 16 GB + 1 TB. The 1 TB tier earns its place on a phone that shoots 4K at 120 fps and 10-bit log β footage at those settings fills a drive quickly.
HONOR also fits its own H1 imaging chip alongside the Qualcomm silicon, plus laser autofocus, a colour-temperature sensor and a flicker sensor.

Battery and charging: 7060 mAh, and you can play while it fills
The silicon-carbon cell is rated at 7060 mAh typical, 6880 mAh nominal β a big battery for a 6.31-inch phone, and it needs to be, because motors draw power that a static camera module never does.
Charging is 120 W wired HONOR SuperCharge (the phone accepts up to 20 V/6 A, and falls back to 11 V/6 A, 20 V/3.3 A or 5 V/3 A) and 50 W wireless SuperCharge, with the wireless pad sold separately. Reverse wireless charging is supported.
The more interesting trick is split-charging: the charger can feed the phone directly and bypass the cell, so gaming while plugged in does not cook the battery with charge-and-discharge cycles at the same time. HONOR did not invent this β bypassing the cell has been a gaming-phone trick for years β but it rarely reaches a mainstream flagship.

Cameras: two 200 MP sensors and an ARRI colour pipeline
The gimbal main camera is a 200 MP sensor on a 1/1.28-inch chip at f/1.6, with OIS on top of the 3-axis mechanical stabilisation. Because the mechanism moves the whole optical assembly, it corrects the kind of motion β walking, a moving car, a handheld pan β that electronic stabilisation can only fix by cropping.
The second 200 MP camera is a periscope telephoto on a 1/1.4-inch sensor at f/2.6, giving 2.7Γ optical zoom, OIS and up to 200Γ digital. A 50 MP ultra-wide at f/2.0 covers 122Β° and focuses down to 2.5 cm for macro. The selfie camera is a 50 MP f/2.0 with a 90Β° field of view.
Video is where the hardware is aimed. The rear cameras shoot 4K at 30, 60 and 120 fps and 1080p slow motion at up to 240 fps, with a 0.5β15Γ zoom range when the gimbal is closed and 1β10Γ when it is deployed. The ARRI partnership adds LogC3 recording at 4K up to 60 fps in both states, with ARRI Image Science, Wide Gamut 3 and ARRI Looks β 10-bit, 14 stops of dynamic range, and downloadable Rec.709 conversion LUTs on HONOR's site for grading afterwards.
Four digital noise-cancelling microphones handle sound, and the audio pickup zone follows the gimbal as it turns, so the sound arrives from wherever the camera is pointing.
For context on what it is up against: the vivo X300 Ultra and the OPPO Find X9 Ultra both chase the same camera-flagship buyer with larger conventional sensor stacks. Neither can move its lens.
Software: MagicOS 10, and a camera that takes instructions
The phone ships with MagicOS 10 on Android 16. HONOR has not published an OS or security update commitment for it, so we are not going to invent one.
The feature built for this hardware is YOYO Robot Mode. Ask the assistant to shoot, and the gimbal takes over: AI live-tracking keeps the subject in frame while the head turns, voice localisation points the camera at whoever is speaking, and gesture recognition lets you start or stop a take with your hands full. Pre-composed framing lets you set a shot and have the camera hold it as people move through it.
YOYO Auto Execution handles multi-step tasks outside the camera too β a single spoken instruction can chain several actions across apps and connected devices. The rest is standard MagicOS: an AI assistant with memory, on-device translation, document scanning and HONOR's cross-device sharing.
The practical read is that the gimbal is only as good as the software driving it. HONOR has clearly built the mode first and the hardware around it, which is the right way round.
Price and availability
In China, the first market on sale, the Robot Phone costs Β₯9 999 for 12 GB + 512 GB and Β₯12 999 for 16 GB + 1 TB β roughly $1 480 / β¬1 280 and $1 924 / β¬1 669 at today's rates, before local taxes.
Pre-orders opened on 12 August at 20:30 local time, and sales start on 18 August at 10:08. Imported into a market where HONOR does not officially sell it, that price gains customs duty and local VAT, so the real cost outside China is noticeably higher than the conversion suggests.
HONOR has published a global product page and ran the launch as a global event, but no European price, on-sale date or retail listing exists yet β the country pages that are live carry no buy path. HONOR does not sell phones in the United States, so there will be no US price. We will update this article the moment official European pricing and dates land.
The box is unusually full for 2026: charger, USB-C cable, SIM tool, a magnetic case, a lanyard, a magnetic stand and a pre-applied screen protector.

Verdict
The Robot Phone is the first phone in years where the interesting part is mechanical. A motorised titanium gimbal that lifts a 200 MP camera out of the body and turns it under software control is not a gimmick you can dismiss on a spec sheet β it does something for handheld video that no amount of sensor-shift OIS or electronic cropping achieves, and the ARRI colour pipeline gives the footage somewhere serious to go afterwards. It is also 248 g, IP54, and priced above almost every conventional flagship, which is what a mechanism costs. If you shoot video handheld and have been carrying a separate gimbal to do it, this is the most interesting phone of the year. If you mostly take stills and want a sealed, pocketable flagship, HONOR's own Magic8 Pro is the better phone and the cheaper one. The open question is Europe: HONOR launched this globally on paper, but until a European price and date exist, the only way to own one is an import with the duty and VAT that implies.
