Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 · The wide fold goes global, at 201 grams

This is the launch that will be remembered from Galaxy Unpacked of 22 July 2026. The regular Galaxy Z Fold, the phone that defined the book-style foldable for seven generations, has been rebuilt around a different question: not how big a screen can fold into a phone, but what shape of screen people actually want to hold. Samsung's answer is the wide fold, and we consider it the most exciting direction the category has taken: a phone that is genuinely pleasant closed and opens into a tablet shaped like the content we watch and read.

Huawei invented this category, and its Pura X Max remains a superb phone that never left China. That is what makes the Fold8 matter so much: it takes the wide-fold concept and puts it in stores worldwide, with Google services, seven years of updates and Samsung's retail reach behind it. The classic tall Fold shape lives on in the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra; the Fold8 is the one betting on the future.

Closed, the Fold8 measures 123.9 × 81.9 mm and 9.7 mm thin, a short, wide slab that sits in the hand like a small notebook rather than a TV remote. Open, it is a 4.5 mm thin tablet. At 201 g it is the lightest Galaxy Fold ever made, and remarkably light for a device with two screens; for comparison, the wide-fold Pura X Max weighs 229 g and even the sleekest book-style foldables we cover sit around 220 g.

The engineering enabler is Flex Titanium: a titanium-alloy film combined with an enhanced titanium plate under the main display. It strengthens the panel, absorbs impact and reduces how visible the crease becomes over time, and Samsung retuned the hinge mechanics, display tension and magnets around it so the phone opens with a smoother, lighter action. Water resistance is rated IP48, meaning full immersion protection in up to 1.5 m of fresh water for 30 minutes but only partial dust protection. The dual camera sits in a raised pill in the upper corner of the back, so the closed phone rocks a little on a desk when you type on it. Colours are Lavender, Graphite and Cream, with Pistachio exclusive to Samsung.com.

The Fold8's displays are defined by their proportions rather than raw size. The 5.5-inch WUXGA+ cover screen uses a 10:16 ratio at a dense 428 ppi, so the closed phone feels like a compact, normal smartphone for messages, browsing and short video. Unfolded sideways, the 7.6-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display is a wide 4:3 canvas: films run with far less letterboxing than on the near-square screens of classic folds, games get a proper landscape stage, and rotated upright it takes the shape of a paperback page for reading. Both panels refresh at an adaptive 1–120 Hz, and the main display reaches 3,000 nits peak brightness with a low-reflection finish.

Samsung does not publish a crease-depth claim, but with Flex Titanium it explicitly targets lower crease visibility over time, and in the official footage the fold line is barely there.

There is no silicon penalty for choosing the new shape: the Fold8 runs the same Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform for Galaxy as its Ultra sibling, Qualcomm's 3 nm flagship tuned for Galaxy at up to 4.74 GHz. Configurations are 12 GB of RAM with 256 GB or 512 GB of storage, and 16 GB with 1 TB, so the wide fold is not treated as the lesser phone in memory either.

The dual-cell battery holds 4,800 mAh, 400 mAh more than the Z Fold7 despite the lighter body, with an EU energy label class A and at least 1,200 rated charge cycles; Samsung quotes up to 26 hours of video playback. Wired charging is 45 W, good for 63 % in about 30 minutes, wireless is 20 W, and Wireless PowerShare turns the back into a pad for earbuds or a watch. As with the rest of the class in the EU, there is no charger in the box. The only other wide fold to compare it with is Huawei's, and that one charges faster: the Pura X Max fills at 66 W wired and 50 W wireless.

Samsung equips the Fold8 with dual 50 MP cameras: a 50 MP main (f/1.8, OIS) and a 50 MP ultrawide (f/1.9, 120° with autofocus), so wide and ultrawide shots keep the same high resolution instead of dropping to a soft 12 MP the moment you go wide. The main sensor's Adaptive Pixel design provides a 2× optical-quality zoom, a crop that keeps real detail, with digital zoom to 10×; there is no dedicated telephoto, which is the honest cost of the thin, light body. Video reaches 8K at 30 fps.

The fold itself is the extra lens trick: Dual Recording films with front and rear cameras at once while you preview yourself on the cover screen, and My FanCam tracks a chosen subject in a scene and reframes the footage into a social-ready ratio in the Gallery, no manual editing required. Both selfie cameras are 10 MP, with the inner one covering a wide 100° field for group shots.

The Fold8 ships with Android 17 and One UI 9 and the same seven-year update promise as the Ultra, valid to July 2033. Galaxy AI is tuned to the format: Now Nudge suggests the next step out of a conversation and opens it in split view beside the chat, Now Brief keeps a personalised feed on the cover screen, and Gemini Intelligence automates tasks across more than 40 apps, with Gemini Notebook turning notes and files into documents and audio overviews on the wide display. Samsung backs it with the Knox stack, on-device encryption of AI data and the new AI Assistant Activity dashboard, and buyers get six months of Google AI Pro with 5 TB of storage. Quick Share now works with AirDrop in both directions.

Pre-orders opened on 22 July 2026 and general availability starts on 7 August 2026. The Fold8 costs $1,899.99 / €1,999 / £1,699 for 12 GB + 256 GB, with 512 GB and 1 TB options above. That positions the boldest phone of the trio $200 below the Ultra, and makes it the cheapest route into a big-screen Samsung foldable this generation.
