For years Samsung kept its Ultra badge for the Galaxy S line, and its foldables always stopped one step short of it. At Galaxy Unpacked on 22 July 2026 that changed: the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is the first foldable Samsung considers worthy of the name, and the spec sheet backs the claim. It takes the classic book-style Fold shape and pushes it to Ultra in every direction at once: the biggest display, the strongest camera system and the largest battery a Galaxy Fold has ever carried, in the thinnest body the line has ever had.

It arrives alongside the reshaped Galaxy Z Fold8 and the slimmer Galaxy Z Flip8, and it sits above both: this is the one built for people who treat a foldable as a pocket workstation.

Open, the Fold8 Ultra measures 4.1 mm; closed, it is 8.9 mm. That makes it Samsung's slimmest Fold to date, within a hair of the 4.0 mm HONOR Magic V6 that still holds the thinness crown in our catalogue. Where the Ultra does take a crown is weight: at 215 g it is the lightest of the modern foldables we cover, and lighter than most bar flagships with far smaller screens.

The structure is new, too. Samsung's Flex Titanium display architecture puts a titanium-alloy film and a reinforced titanium plate under the inner screen to absorb pressure and reduce crease visibility over time, while the slimmer Armor FlexHinge and a bevelled inner bezel make the phone easier to open one-handed. The frame is Armor Aluminum, the cover screen wears Corning's new Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 and the back Gorilla Glass Victus 2. One ergonomic note: the triple camera sits in a raised stack in the top corner of the back, so the phone rocks on a desk when you type on it.

Water resistance is rated IP48: the phone survives immersion in up to 1.5 m of fresh water for 30 minutes, which foldables used to be incapable of, but the 4 means dust protection covers only particles above 1 mm, so it is not fully dust-tight the way an IP68 phone is. Colours are Violet Shadow, Graphite and Cream, with Green Shadow exclusive to Samsung.com.

The main event is the 8.0-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, the largest a Galaxy Fold has ever had, at 2,504 × 2,256 and a sharp 422 ppi. It runs an adaptive 1–120 Hz and peaks at 3,000 nits, 15 % brighter than the Z Fold7, and an anti-reflective coating keeps glare down, so the big screen stays readable outdoors. The 6.5-inch FHD+ cover display matches the 1–120 Hz refresh and the 422 ppi density, and its near-normal proportions mean the closed phone types like a regular slab.

One omission carries over from the previous generation: the Fold8 Ultra does not support the S Pen, so the big canvas remains finger-only.

Samsung runs the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, the custom-clocked version of Qualcomm's 3 nm flagship chip, at up to 4.74 GHz. Against the Z Fold7's platform Samsung quotes 21 % faster AI processing, 15 % better graphics and 16 % faster CPU work, and an expanded graphite cooling structure spreads the heat so performance holds up under long multitasking and editing sessions. Memory options are 12 GB with 256 GB or 512 GB of storage, and 16 GB with 1 TB.

The Fold8 Ultra packs a 5,000 mAh dual battery, up 600 mAh on the Z Fold7 despite the thinner body, and Samsung rates it for up to 27 hours of video playback. It also carries an EU energy label class A and a minimum 1,200 charge cycles. Charging moves to a 45 W dual-path architecture that splits power across the battery system, reaching 67 % in about 30 minutes, with 20 W wireless on top. Reverse wireless charging is here too as Wireless PowerShare, so the back can top up earbuds or a watch.

Honesty requires context, though: the Chinese foldables we cover play in another league here, with the vivo X Fold6 at 7,000 mAh and 80 W and the Magic V6 at 6,660 mAh with 66 W wireless. Samsung closes the gap on its own past, not on the class. And as is now standard in the EU, there is no charger in the box; Samsung sells the 45 W adapter separately.

The rear system is led by a 200 MP main camera (f/1.7, OIS) that now applies HDR processing in the full 200 MP mode, so backlit scenes keep both highlights and shadows even at maximum resolution. Its Adaptive Pixel sensor also provides a 2× optical-quality zoom, a sensor crop that keeps real detail rather than digital upscaling. The new 50 MP ultrawide (f/1.9, autofocus) opens 34 % brighter than the Z Fold7's and records 8K video just like the main camera, and improved Nightography processing cleans up noise in low light. Both the cover and inner 10 MP selfie cameras get an AI image signal processor for more natural skin tones.

The soft spot is reach: the 10 MP telephoto offers 3× optical zoom (30× digital), a modest lens for a $2,100 camera system when the OPPO Find N6 fits a 50 MP periscope at the same 3× reach. For creators the Ultra compensates with video: 8K at 30 fps through the efficient APV codec, 4K slow motion at 120 fps and Cine LUT colour grading directly on the 8-inch screen.

The Fold8 Ultra ships with Android 17 and One UI 9, and Samsung promises seven years of OS and security updates, valid to July 2033. Galaxy AI is the headline and it leans agentic: Now Brief surfaces personalised insights on the cover screen, Now Nudge reads a conversation and offers the next step, opening the calendar or maps beside the chat in split view on the big display, and Gemini Intelligence automates actions across more than 40 apps. Gemini Notebook turns notes, files and recordings into documents and audio overviews in one workspace, and buyers get six months of Google AI Pro with 5 TB of cloud storage included.

Samsung pairs the AI push with visible controls: the Knox security stack encrypts personal AI data on device in Knox Vault and KEEP, and a new AI Assistant Activity dashboard lists every automation running on your behalf. Quick Share now also talks to AirDrop in both directions, which removes one of the last practical frictions of switching from an iPhone.

Pre-orders opened worldwide on 22 July 2026, and general availability starts on 7 August 2026. The Fold8 Ultra starts at $2,099.99 / €2,199 / £1,899 for 12 GB + 256 GB, with 512 GB and 1 TB tiers above it. That is Ultra pricing in every sense.
