The Flip becomes an AI accessory in the best sense
Flips are bought with different eyes than big folds: for style, for pocketability, for the mirror-selfie party trick. At Galaxy Unpacked on 22 July 2026 Samsung leaned into exactly that with the Galaxy Z Flip8, the third member of the trio alongside the reshaped Galaxy Z Fold8 and the flagship Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. The pitch is simple: make the sleekest Flip ever, then make its cover screen smart enough that you rarely need to open the phone at all.

Design and build: 6.1 millimetres, 180 grams
Unfolded, the Flip8 is just 6.1 mm thin; closed, the once-chunky clamshell now measures 13.1 mm. At 180 g it is Samsung's lightest Flip to date, and it undercuts the 199 g Motorola Razr Ultra, the other premium flip we cover, by a clear margin while being noticeably slimmer both open and closed. The cameras sit nearly flush beside the cover screen, so there is no wobble drama here: closed, it rests on a desk like a compact.
Durability follows the series: IP48 water resistance survives immersion in up to 1.5 m of fresh water for 30 minutes, a level flips used to miss entirely, though the 4 means it is not sealed against fine dust. Colours are Pink, Graphite and Cream, with Mint exclusive to Samsung.com.

Displays: a proper phone inside, a smart panel outside
Open, the Flip8 offers a 6.9-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display at an adaptive 1–120 Hz and 400 ppi, a full-sized flagship screen. Closed, the 4.1-inch Super AMOLED FlexWindow (1,048 × 948, up to 120 Hz) is the real character of the phone: Samsung has rebuilt it as an AI-native home screen rather than a widget strip. Now Brief serves timely cards where a clock used to be, apps run directly on the cover, and Gemini automations fire from the side key or by voice without unfolding the phone. Samsung does not quote a peak-brightness figure for either panel, so we leave that column honest and empty.

Performance: Samsung's own Exynos 2600 takes the wheel
The Flip8 breaks from its siblings' Snapdragon and runs Samsung's own Exynos 2600, a deca-core design clocked up to 3.8 GHz with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB or 512 GB of storage. Samsung positions it as a full flagship platform for the Flip's quick-hit, AI-heavy usage pattern; whether it matches the Snapdragon phones in sustained loads is something first retail units will show. Day to day, the more relevant numbers are elsewhere: the phone drives DeX, Wi-Fi 7 and the whole Galaxy AI stack without breaking stride.

Battery and charging: 31 hours of video from 4,300 mAh
The 4,300 mAh dual battery is the largest figure on the Flip8's sheet relative to its size, and Samsung's own rating of up to 31 hours of video playback is actually longer than what it quotes for either Fold8, a testament to the efficient chip and FHD+ panel. The cell carries an EU energy label class A and at least 1,200 rated cycles. Charging is the sheet's conservative line: 25 W wired (55 % in about 30 minutes) and 15 W wireless, with Wireless PowerShare on the back for earbuds; the Razr Ultra fills far faster at 68 W. As usual in the EU, no charger ships in the box.

Cameras: FlexCam is the feature, 50 MP is the sensor
The rear pair is a 50 MP main camera (f/1.8, OIS) with a 2× optical-quality zoom, a sensor crop that keeps real detail, plus a 12 MP ultrawide with a 123° field of view; the inner selfie camera is 10 MP and video tops out at 4K 60 fps. The ProVisual Engine handles noise and skin tones, and there is no telephoto, which at this size surprises no one.
What sells a Flip is how it shoots, and here the Flip8 stacks its deck: half-open Flex Mode turns the phone into its own tripod for hands-free shots, the new Camcorder Grip with a Zoom Rocker gives filming a proper hold, Super Steady gains a Horizontal Lock that keeps the frame level in action shots, and the FlexWindow doubles as a preview so subjects see themselves while you shoot with the sharp main camera. FlipShot mirror selfies and cover-screen selfie videos round out a camera experience no bar phone replicates.

Software: One UI 9 with Galaxy AI closest to hand
The Flip8 runs Android 17 with One UI 9 and gets the same seven years of OS and security updates as the Folds, valid to July 2033, a support window that used to be unthinkable in this category. Galaxy AI is genuinely closer at hand here than on any other Galaxy: Now Brief and Now Nudge live on the FlexWindow, Gemini Intelligence automates actions across more than 40 apps from the cover screen, and the Knox stack with Knox Vault, KEEP encryption and the new AI Assistant Activity dashboard keeps the personal data side visible and controllable. Buyers also get six months of Google AI Pro with 5 TB of storage, and Quick Share now exchanges files with AirDrop in both directions.
Price and availability
Pre-orders opened on 22 July 2026, with general availability from 7 August 2026. The Flip8 starts at $1,199.99 / €1,299 / £1,149 for 12 GB + 256 GB, with a 512 GB tier above it, keeping the Flip the accessible door into Samsung foldables. We will update this article with the per-tier European prices once regional stores publish them.

Yhteenveto
The Flip8 knows exactly what it is. It is the phone you buy to carry less phone: thinner and lighter than any Flip before it, with a cover screen capable enough that you often do not need to open the phone at all. The charging speed is the one line Samsung left in the past decade, and photographers will find more lens elsewhere. But as a pocketable, personable everyday flagship with seven years of support, the Flip8 is the most complete small foldable Samsung has made.

Samsungin ensimmäinen kolmeen taittuva puhelin pakkaa 10 tuuman näytön taskuun mahtuvaan 12,9 mm:n runkoon, jonka paneelit ovat ohuimmillaan 3,9 mm, ja siitä tuli keräilyharvinaisuus kuukausissa: rajoitettu erä on nyt virallisesti myyty loppuun, eikä Eurooppa saanut ainuttakaan kappaletta.
